Assignment 2
Pidwa Conservation Project – Limpopo Province, South Africa
Beautiful Pidwa Private Game Reserve is based 60 kilometres from Kruger National Park in South Africa. Our two Involvement Volunteers will join a team living on 10,000 hectares of true African bush, home to an amazing variety of wildlife - big and small!
You will be assisting conservation experts with research projects designed to protect the Park’s mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, insects, fish and indigenous plant species.
As part of the assignment, you will go out on overnight camping trips to monitor night-time animal activity.
A passion for animals and a desire to learn about their habitat is essential!
Pidwa is part of a unique ecosystem, well-known for its bio-diversity: the Kruger to Canyon biosphere.
Over the years, the owners and management have made substantial progress in the reintroduction of natural wild fauna onto the Reserve. Today the Reserve is managed according to sound ecological principles.
Volunteers make a highly valuable contribution to the research projects underway at Pidwa.
You will live with a team at the well-equipped volunteer house in the Reserve, where duties are shared. A weekly visit is made to Hoedspruit, the nearest town to Pidwa for supplies.
During your time at Pidwa, the local team there can arrange a number of activities to really let you explore what the area has to offer. This can include:
- The Panorama day trip – visits to the most beautiful viewpoints on the escarpment;
- Tours of the local silk farms; A tour to the White Lion project and a local wildlife rehabilitation project;
- A hot air balloon day trip over Kruger National Park!
